![]() ![]() Maybe I’ve been swimming too much in the Early Access area of Steam lately, but it was really refreshing to see an indie game with such a high level of polish applied. I did notice some screen tearing and framerate drops during cutscenes, but these are so brief and rare that it wasn’t much of an issue. I never had a crash with Victor Vran, and my PC chewed through dense dungeons and a lot of particle effects without so much as a stutter. Eventually, because even cheerfully dancing skeletons are evil, I had to break up 2012’s most irritating viral dance craze with a shotgun. It’s a dated joke, sure, but it is achingly sincere and it made me laugh. My favorite moment came when I discovered a secret enclave of enchanted dancers, skeletons wearing wigs and sunglasses and dancing to Gangnam Style. Though the narrator does most of the comedic heavy lifting, enemies and puzzles in the game are not without a sense of humor. Though I mostly enjoyed it, I found that the Voice’s jokes fall pretty flat when they winkingly break the fourth wall. It’s nowhere near as reactive as Bastion’s narrator, speaking much less frequently and referencing on-screen events much more vaguely. The posh but obviously evil inner voice narrates Victor’s travels, commenting on his actions and occasionally taunting him. Victor Vran is reminiscent of Bastion in the way its combat and characters work, but it also attempts something similar to the reactive narrator that made Bastion famous. If I didn’t have cash reserves and failed to get a lucky drop, the game became a slog with an underleveled weapon. Usually I found my gear through loot drops, but occasionally I had to turn to the incredibly expensive gear vendors in the main castle. The downside to this system, though, is that it’s heavily dependent on getting a great main weapon. With so many moving pieces, I’m impressed that everything evens out so well. I prefer the sweeping strokes of the broadsword, but I can’t say that it actually kills stuff better than the rapier or scythe. Combining powers with a friend in co-op, wading into a seething pile of nasties and making the whole dungeon go sizzle, is undeniably fun.Īmazingly, all of the skills and spells and boosts and weapons are all nicely balanced. Between weapon skills, throwable grenades, Demon powers, and Destiny cards, there are a lot of tools to fling at the army of the undead. ![]() Destiny cards modify character stats like increasing ranged damage, increasing health, or making enemies explode on a critical hit. Victor’s basic skills can be tweaked and augmented by a selection of two Demon powers-powerful spells with effects that summon meteors, unleash explosive shockwaves, or draw down a roving pillar of fire. Played with friends in co-op multiplayer, it’s a damn fine time. To be clear, Victor Vran is not as great as any of those games, but it’s not bad, either. Victor Vran’s combat requires more involvement than click-click-clicking through Torchlight, and its sense of whimsy separates it from the (sometimes) self-serious Diablo. But I think it’s more accurate to imagine it as Bastion strutting around in a campy Van Helsing cosplay. It is like those games in some ways: there are levels to grind through and loot to find and weapon skills to chain together. Like any ARPG, Victor Vran keeps getting compared to Diablo and Torchlight. He explodes so violently that the skeleton next to him explodes, setting off the next one, until the entire group has been reduced to a pile of calcium after one hit. I equip the monstrous two-handed warhammer and take aim at a nearby skeleton, the first of an advancing horde. Just in time, I open a treasure chest and find the preposterously named Zealous Executioner’s Hammer of Luck. ![]() ![]() ![]() For these guys, the digital artifacts and somewhat glitchy sound of the original Bass Whammy weren’t a problem- they were part of its charm.Ī mini toggle above the selection dial lets you choose between classic and chords settings. Indie-rockers and more experimentally minded players will appreciate that DigiTech included the monophonic classic mode. Like other Whammys, there’s a knob for dialing in the desired whammy or harmony selection, but there’s also a MIDI input option. There’s no way around the fact that the Bass Whammy is larger than most pedals-especially in light of the recent trend toward ultra-miniaturization-but there’s also a lot going on inside. Luckily, DigiTech recently rolled out the next-generation Bass Whammy, which builds on the beloved quirks of the original while also offering more modern options for those who like the concept but prefer sleeker execution-and this one won’t set you back a small fortune, either. But lately, there’s been a resurgence of interest in the original, and as usually happens with popular rare gear, the resurgence brought a marked inflation in price, too. Introduced to the low-end community in the ’90s, the pitch-stretching pedal was a hit with a small but avid niche of players, but eventually it was discontinued and fell into pawnshop purgatory. Such has been the case for many owners of the original DigiTech Bass Whammy. But it’s doubly painful when you let go of something rare that becomes much more costly to replace by the time you see the error of your ways. ![]() Just about every bassist and guitarist on the planet has regretted letting go of a particular piece of gear at one time or another, be it a vintage amp or instrument, or perhaps more commonly, a stompbox. ![]() ![]() ![]() Highly manual process, for some files it's just pattern matching / renaming and goes really quickly, for others it's full reimplementation and a bit harder.Īnd, if you look at most "decompiled game" projects, I think this is the industry standard way to do this. You'd still need to buy the tables, of course. I think to get it we would need to be willing to pay for a 3D DLC that would unlock 3D on all tables, future and present. It was so trippy that I laughed the entire time I was playing it!Īnyway, real 3D rendering would look sweet in TPA. It was as if the play field was actually glass with lights inside of the glass and the play field art was actually a 3D diarama set below the glass. But the play field art was rendered on a plane about 2 inches below the ball and the pkay field lights. It made the lights on the play field on the same plane as the ball. The magic lamp wound up looking kind of like it was 2D and painted onto the play field. TotAN was a hilarious acid trip! The 3D conversion algorithm worked great on the ramps and ok on the genie. The ramps really popped up and the whole layout of the table was enhanced. I only had time to play Gofers and Arabian Nights. Has anyone played TPA in 2D to 3D mode on a 3D tv? I tried that out this weekend. This mode is really great for racing games so that each person can have their own full screen view of just their car in the race, but I think it could be fun in pinball also. This view is in 2D but would give people the ability to play a two person game simultaneously as if you were playing the same pinball table right next to each other. That would also give them the ability to offer simultaneous view. It would be probably the easiest upgrade that they could do to the game. They would probably have to cut the frame rate in half. Since TPA has multiple camera views they can just create a stereoscopic view for each existing camera view and they'd have the information to display 3D. The game then renders another view just slightly offset from your own to create the stereoscopic view, then the game cuts the frame rate in half in order to accommodate the new view and outputs to 3D on your tv. Its a first person shooter so you are the camera in the game. But the cut scenes are pre-rendered and they would actually have to go back and render another perspective. One of the stereoscopic gurus on there that works in the commercial film industry explained that any game that is made from 3D models and can be played from multiple angles, can very easily be displayed in 3D. We were talking about 3D in the game Black Ops 2 and I mentioned that I thought it was strange that the whole game and all mode were in 3D but none of the cut scenes were. I do some 3D photography and frequent a 3D photography forum. ![]() And since a 3D feature will ALWAYS be optional and is so easy to add in devleopment, there is no reason anyone should be championing against 3D being added to TPA.Ī couple more thoughts on 3D in TPA. Like I said in the above post, since 3D is not all that complicated or development heavy to implement, there is no reason it shouldn't be added. Anything that can make a virtual pinball table feel more real, to me, should be explored and if possible added. Simply because you can say that about many things such as stereo sound, playing in color, having back glass art, glow effects, reflections etc etc. Also saying something like "It's not like it's a tool that helps me be better at pinball", is a pretty weak statement imo. To me this goes beyond just the wow factor and has a practical use. When playing Zen 2, I can see everything much clearer and separately simply because of the nature of 3D. When going from playing our real pinball machine to the "flat" virtual tables on TPA, I notice it is much harder to "see" items on the table as they all appear to be on top of each other in a mess of convolution. ![]() ![]() It allows us to fund the costs associated with software development, as well as other projects and innovations," reads a forum post (Opens in a new window) from the uTorrent team in August of 2015. Presumably, a small annual payment of $5 is much easier to deal with, and we'll be curious to see how many users sign up.
